A Modernist in a time of Alter-Modernism?
Lately I have been feeling a bit like a Modernist in an Alter-Modern or Cos-Modern time- A bit old-fashioned in approach. I often think of Guston, Rothko and Mitchell and the seriousness of their work and their application. Guston's work has always fascinated and those in the know will recognise the title of his daughters excellent biography in a lot of my writing. This week I see a young BA painter Georgina Harris win the Freelands art competition online and think that maybe all is not lost.

Somehow I think the distinction between art therapy and art needs re-addressing. Yes it can be therapeutic to make art works but that is a side issue for me - a bonus result from this activity. There are other examples I am sure. The work is serious and we can see the gap closing because of amateurism, populism, and social platforms. How best to express this. Firstly finish reading Prof Alana Jelineks excellent 'This is not Art', and email her these notes. The star wars drawing for Paul Johnson is an absolute MUST.
